We had a fantastic time at the Reel Earth Film Festival and were honoured to be the opening night film and then to win the Audience Choice Award. It's our 9th festival award and pretty fantastic end to our official festival run!

The people of Palmerston North were amazingly hospitable. By the end of the first week we had access to bicycles and a car, had been invited to 3 locals' homes for dinner, and were staying at someone's house while they were away for the weekend! The City organized a run of events for us throughout the week, so we got to speak to hundreds of school children as well as government employees about waste reduction and compare how resources differ from Canada.

We met a bunch of great filmmakers from all over the world including Joel Heath who directed People of a Feather and who, it turns out, lives just a block away from us back here in Vancouver.

Thanks again to the festival and all involved for making it a memorable trip!

Fundraisers and Festivals

After a fabulous Earth Week with visits to Science World, skype Q and A’s with Toronto high schools, and a trip to Victoria and Campbell River, we’re heading south. I headed to Tofino for the Tofino Film Festival and Grant headed to Wichita for the Tallgrass Film Festival. Both of us had fabulous times.

Tofino plays starts playing movies at 4pm, so I had plenty of time for relaxing and beach walking before film watching. The organizers work so hard to get great films and to get directors out to their gorgeous town, and it really showed. I got to see a slew of really good movies including How to Die in Oregon which won the Grand Prize at Sundance, so we were in pretty good company.

Grant missed his connecting flight and ended up renting a car and driving into Wichita at 3:30am, but it was reportedly all uphill from there. Despite his lack of sleep, he participated in a filmmakers meet and greet, a panel discussion, and had Q and A at a sold out screening. When he got home, he wouldn't stop talking about the welcoming people and the abundance of friendly volunteers and great food.

Better yet, although Kansas is apparently the worst state for sustainability, our film was really well recieved, and we garnered runner up for audience choice for Best Documentary!
